Tendai sect
The Tendai sect is a school of Japanese Buddhism that originated in the 9th century. Founded by the monk Saichō, it emphasizes the teachings of the Lotus Sutra and integrates various Buddhist practices, including meditation and rituals. Tendai is known for its belief in the potential for enlightenment for all beings.
Tendai played a significant role in the development of Japanese Buddhism and influenced other sects, such as Nichiren and Pure Land Buddhism. The sect's main temple, Enryaku-ji, is located on Mount Hiei near Kyoto and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
