Tenant Farming
Tenant farming is an agricultural system where a farmer, known as a tenant, rents land from a landowner to grow crops. Instead of paying cash rent, tenants often share a portion of their harvest with the landowner. This arrangement allows individuals without land to farm and earn a living.
This practice has historical roots, particularly in the United States during the post-Civil War era. It provided opportunities for many, including freed slaves, to work the land. However, tenant farming often led to economic challenges, as tenants could struggle to make a profit after paying their share to the landowner.
