Tanning Process
The tanning process is a method used to convert animal hides into leather. This involves treating the raw hides with various chemicals or natural substances to prevent decay and make them more durable. Common tanning agents include chromium salts, vegetable tannins, and synthetic chemicals.
During tanning, the collagen fibers in the hide are stabilized, which gives leather its strength and flexibility. The process can take several weeks and may include steps like soaking, liming, and drying. Once completed, the leather can be dyed and finished for various uses, such as clothing, accessories, and upholstery.
