Syndesmosis
Syndesmosis is a type of fibrous joint where two bones are connected by a ligament. This joint allows for limited movement and provides stability. An example of syndesmosis is found between the tibia and fibula in the lower leg, where a strong ligament holds the two bones together.
In syndesmosis, the bones are not directly connected by cartilage, unlike other joints. Instead, the ligaments provide the necessary support and flexibility. Injuries to syndesmosis joints, such as a high ankle sprain, can occur during sports or physical activities, leading to pain and swelling in the affected area.
