Swelling is an increase in the size of a body part due to the accumulation of fluid in tissues. This can occur in response to injury, infection, or inflammation, as the body sends extra blood and immune cells to the affected area. Common examples of swelling include a sprained ankle or a bee sting.
Swelling can be temporary or chronic, depending on the underlying cause. It may be accompanied by other symptoms such as pain, redness, or warmth. Treatment often involves rest, ice, compression, and elevation, commonly referred to as the RICE method, to help reduce the swelling.
