Sviat Vechir
Sviat Vechir, or Holy Evening, is a traditional Ukrainian Christmas Eve celebration that takes place on January 6. Families gather for a special meal that typically includes twelve dishes, symbolizing the twelve apostles. The meal often features traditional foods like kutia (a sweet grain dish), fish, and various vegetables.
The evening begins with the first star appearing in the sky, marking the start of the festivities. After the meal, families may sing kolyadky (Christmas carols) and participate in religious services. This celebration emphasizes family, faith, and the importance of sharing with others.
