Superior Mesenteric Artery
The Superior Mesenteric Artery (SMA) is a major blood vessel that supplies oxygenated blood to the small intestine and parts of the large intestine. It branches off from the abdominal aorta just below the celiac trunk and runs downward, providing essential blood flow to the duodenum, jejunum, ileum, and the proximal part of the colon.
The SMA plays a crucial role in digestion and nutrient absorption by delivering blood to the intestines. Any blockage or narrowing of this artery can lead to serious conditions, such as mesenteric ischemia, which can cause abdominal pain and digestive issues.
