Sugawara no Michizane
Sugawara no Michizane was a prominent Japanese scholar, poet, and politician during the Heian period (794-1185). Born in 845, he became known for his exceptional knowledge of Chinese literature and his contributions to the imperial court. His career flourished until he was falsely accused of treason, leading to his exile to Kyushu in 901.
After his death in 903, Michizane was posthumously honored and revered as a deity of learning and scholarship. He became the focus of worship at Tenmangu shrines across Japan, where students and scholars pray for success in their studies. His legacy continues to influence Japanese culture today.
