Sudan People's Liberation Movement
The Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) is a political party in South Sudan, originally formed in 1983 as a rebel group during the Second Sudanese Civil War. Its primary goal was to fight for the rights and autonomy of the southern Sudanese people against the northern government. The SPLM played a crucial role in the peace negotiations that led to the Comprehensive Peace Agreement in 2005, which ultimately resulted in South Sudan's independence in 2011.
After independence, the SPLM became the ruling party in South Sudan. However, internal conflicts and power struggles emerged, leading to a civil war in 2013. The SPLM has since faced challenges in governance and unity, with splinter factions forming, such as the SPLM-in-Opposition, led by former Vice President Riek Machar. The party continues to be a significant player in South Sudan's political landscape.
