State Rights Party
The State Rights Party, also known as the Dixiecrat Party, was a short-lived political party in the United States that emerged in 1948. It was formed by a faction of the Democratic Party that opposed the civil rights platform adopted at the Democratic National Convention. The party aimed to protect the rights of individual states, particularly in the Southern states, and to maintain racial segregation.
The party's most notable candidate was Strom Thurmond, who ran for president in 1948. Although the State Rights Party did not achieve significant electoral success, it highlighted the tensions within the Democratic Party regarding civil rights and state sovereignty, influencing future political dynamics in the South.
