Spitak earthquake
The Spitak earthquake occurred on December 7, 1988, in northern Armenia, causing widespread devastation. With a magnitude of 6.8, it struck the town of Spitak and surrounding areas, resulting in significant loss of life and property. Approximately 25,000 people died, and hundreds of thousands were left homeless.
The earthquake severely impacted the city of Gyumri, formerly known as Leninakan, and other nearby towns. Emergency response efforts were complicated by the harsh winter conditions. The disaster highlighted the need for improved building codes and disaster preparedness in the region, leading to changes in policies and practices in Armenia.
