Spermatozoon
A spermatozoon, commonly known as a sperm cell, is the male reproductive cell in sexually reproducing organisms. It is typically motile, equipped with a flagellum that allows it to swim towards the female egg for fertilization. Spermatozoa are produced in the male reproductive system, specifically in the testes, through a process called spermatogenesis.
Each spermatozoon consists of three main parts: the head, midpiece, and tail. The head contains genetic material, while the midpiece is packed with mitochondria that provide energy for movement. The tail, or flagellum, propels the sperm through the female reproductive tract to reach the ovum for potential fertilization.
