Special Administrative Regions
Special Administrative Regions (SARs) are distinct areas within a country that maintain a high degree of autonomy. They operate under the principle of "one country, two systems," allowing them to have their own legal systems, economic policies, and governance structures. This arrangement is designed to preserve local customs and practices while still being part of the larger nation.
Currently, there are two SARs in the world: Hong Kong and Macau. Both regions were former colonies that were handed back to China in the late 20th century. Their unique status enables them to manage their own affairs, except in matters of foreign relations and defense.
