Spanish Sahara
The Spanish Sahara, also known as Western Sahara, is a disputed territory located in North Africa. It was a Spanish colony until 1975 when Spain withdrew, leading to a conflict between Morocco and the Polisario Front, a liberation movement seeking independence for the region. The area is rich in natural resources, particularly phosphates and fishing grounds.
Today, the Spanish Sahara remains largely unrecognized as an independent state. The region is divided, with Morocco controlling most of the territory and the Polisario Front governing parts of it from refugee camps in Algeria. The situation has led to ongoing tensions and calls for a resolution.
