Southern Court
The "Southern Court" refers to a faction of the Japanese imperial family during the late 12th to early 14th centuries. It emerged during the Genpei War, a conflict between the Minamoto and Taira clans, leading to the establishment of the Kamakura shogunate. The Southern Court was established in opposition to the Northern Court, which was supported by the shogunate.
The Southern Court was based in Yoshino, a mountainous region in Nara Prefecture. It aimed to restore the rightful emperor, Go-Daigo, to power after he was overthrown. The struggle between the Southern and Northern Courts is known as the Nanboku-chō period, which lasted until the early 1400s.
