The Sonoran Desert Toad, also known as the Colorado River toad, is a large amphibian native to the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. It typically measures 4 to 7 inches in length and has a distinctive olive-green or brown coloration with warty skin. This toad is primarily nocturnal, emerging at night to hunt for insects and other small invertebrates. During the breeding season, which occurs after summer rains, the Sonoran Desert Toad gathers in temporary ponds to mate. Females lay thousands of eggs, which hatch into tadpoles. This toad is known for its potent secretions, which can be toxic to predators and are sometimes misused for recreational purposes.
