Soman
Soman is a highly toxic chemical compound classified as a nerve agent. It is part of a group of chemicals known as organophosphates, which disrupt the normal functioning of the nervous system by inhibiting the enzyme acetylcholinesterase. This leads to an accumulation of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, causing overstimulation of muscles and glands, which can result in severe health effects or death.
Developed in the 1940s, Soman is odorless and tasteless, making it particularly dangerous. It can be absorbed through the skin, inhaled, or ingested, and even small amounts can be lethal. Due to its potential for use in chemical warfare, it is strictly regulated under international treaties like the Chemical Weapons Convention.
