Solenodons
Solenodons are small, nocturnal mammals native to the Caribbean, particularly found in Hispaniola and Puerto Rico. They belong to the family Solenodontidae and are known for their elongated snouts and large, sharp incisors. These unique creatures resemble shrews and are one of the few living members of an ancient group of mammals that date back to the Paleocene era.
Solenodons have a distinctive feature: they possess venomous saliva, which they deliver through grooves in their lower incisors. This adaptation helps them subdue prey, primarily consisting of insects and small invertebrates. Despite their fascinating traits, solenodons are considered endangered due to habitat loss and predation by introduced species.
