Solar Lentigo
Solar lentigo, commonly known as age spots or liver spots, are flat, brown, or black spots that appear on sun-exposed areas of the skin. They are caused by prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or tanning beds, leading to an increase in melanin production. These spots are most commonly found on the face, hands, shoulders, and arms.
While solar lentigines are generally harmless and do not require treatment, they can be a cosmetic concern for some individuals. Prevention includes using sunscreen and wearing protective clothing to minimize sun exposure. If desired, treatments such as laser therapy or topical creams can help reduce their appearance.
