Socket AM2
Socket AM2 is a CPU socket designed by AMD for its line of processors. Introduced in 2006, it supports AMD's Athlon 64, Athlon 64 X2, and Opteron processors, allowing for dual-core and single-core configurations. The socket uses a 940-pin layout and is compatible with DDR2 memory, enhancing performance compared to its predecessor, Socket 939.
This socket was part of AMD's strategy to improve energy efficiency and processing power. It enabled users to upgrade their systems with newer processors while maintaining compatibility with existing motherboards. Socket AM2 was eventually succeeded by Socket AM2+ and Socket AM3.
