Smoothbore Cannons
Smoothbore cannons are artillery pieces characterized by a cylindrical barrel without any rifling, which means the inside of the barrel is smooth. This design allows for the firing of various types of ammunition, including solid shot, explosive shells, and canister shots. Smoothbore cannons were widely used from the 15th century until the mid-19th century, particularly in battles and sieges.
These cannons were typically made of bronze or iron and could vary in size and caliber. Their simplicity made them easier to manufacture and maintain compared to rifled cannons. However, smoothbore cannons had a shorter effective range and less accuracy than their rifled counterparts, such as the Rifled Cannon.
