Smooth muscles
Smooth muscles are a type of involuntary muscle found in various organs throughout the body. Unlike skeletal muscles, which are under conscious control, smooth muscles operate automatically. They are responsible for movements in structures such as the digestive system, blood vessels, and respiratory tract. These muscles help regulate functions like digestion, blood flow, and breathing by contracting and relaxing without conscious effort.
Smooth muscle cells are spindle-shaped and have a single nucleus. They can contract slowly and sustain their contractions for longer periods compared to other muscle types. This unique ability allows smooth muscles to perform essential functions, such as maintaining blood pressure and moving food through the intestines.
