Sir Rufane Donkin
Sir Rufane Donkin was a British soldier and colonial administrator known for his role in the early development of South Africa. He served as the acting governor of the Cape Colony from 1820 to 1821, where he focused on improving infrastructure and promoting agriculture. His efforts contributed to the establishment of Port Elizabeth, a city he founded and named after his late wife.
Donkin was also involved in various military campaigns during his career, including the Napoleonic Wars. After his time in South Africa, he returned to England, where he continued to serve in the military and engage in public life until his death in 1841.
