Sierra Maestra
The Sierra Maestra is a mountain range located in southeastern Cuba. It stretches approximately 250 kilometers and is known for its lush vegetation and diverse wildlife. The highest peak in the range is Pico Turquino, which rises to about 1,974 meters. This area is also significant for its rich history and natural beauty, attracting hikers and nature enthusiasts.
The Sierra Maestra played a crucial role in the Cuban Revolution during the 1950s, serving as a base for revolutionary leaders like Fidel Castro and Che Guevara. The mountains provided a strategic location for guerrilla warfare against the government of Fulgencio Batista. Today, the region is a national park, preserving its ecological and historical importance.
