Siege of Vienna
The Siege of Vienna took place in 1683 when the Ottoman Empire, led by Grand Vizier Kara Mustafa, attempted to capture the city of Vienna, Austria. The siege began in July and lasted until September, with the Ottomans surrounding the city and cutting off supplies. The defenders, led by Count Ernst RĂ¼diger von Starhemberg, held out against overwhelming odds.
In September, a relief army composed of various European forces, including the Polish cavalry under King Jan III Sobieski, arrived to assist the besieged city. The combined forces launched a successful counterattack, leading to the defeat of the Ottoman troops and marking a significant turning point in the struggle between Europe and the Ottoman Empire.
