Siege of Szigetvár
The Siege of Szigetvár took place in 1566 when the Ottoman Empire, led by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, besieged the fortress of Szigetvár in present-day Hungary. The fortress was defended by Nikola Zrinski, a Croatian nobleman, and his troops. Despite being heavily outnumbered, Zrinski and his men held out for several weeks against the Ottoman forces.
The siege ended in September 1566 when the Ottomans finally breached the fortress walls. Although they captured Szigetvár, the fierce resistance put up by Zrinski and his defenders delayed the Ottoman advance into Europe. This battle is remembered as a symbol of heroism and resistance against overwhelming odds.
