Siege of Humaitá
The Siege of Humaitá was a significant military conflict during the Paraguayan War (1864-1870). It took place from 1867 to 1868, when the allied forces of Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay besieged the fortified city of Humaitá, which was a stronghold for the Paraguayan army led by Francisco Solano López. The siege aimed to cut off supplies and weaken Paraguayan resistance.
Despite the prolonged siege, the defenders of Humaitá managed to hold out for over a year. The strategic location of the city along the Paraguay River made it a crucial point for both sides. Eventually, the allies succeeded in breaching the defenses, leading to a significant turning point in the war and contributing to the eventual defeat of Paraguay.
