Battle of Humaitá
The Battle of Humaitá was a significant military engagement during the Paraguayan War (1864-1870), fought between the forces of Paraguay and a coalition of Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay. The battle took place near the fortress of Humaitá, which was strategically important for controlling the Paraguay River. The Paraguayan army, led by Francisco Solano López, aimed to defend their territory against the invading forces.
The battle lasted from 1867 to 1868 and involved intense naval and land combat. Despite the Paraguayan defenses, the coalition forces eventually succeeded in capturing Humaitá, leading to a shift in the war's momentum. This defeat significantly weakened Paraguay's military capabilities and contributed to the eventual downfall of López's regime.
