Sickle Cell Trait
Sickle Cell Trait is a genetic condition where a person inherits one normal hemoglobin gene and one sickle hemoglobin gene. This means they carry the trait but usually do not experience symptoms of Sickle Cell Disease. Individuals with this trait can still produce normal red blood cells, which helps prevent the complications associated with the disease.
People with Sickle Cell Trait can pass the sickle gene to their children. If both parents have the trait, there is a 25% chance their child will inherit Sickle Cell Disease. It is important for individuals with this trait to be aware of their genetic status, especially when planning a family.
