Shunt (Divert)
A shunt, or divert, is a medical device or procedure that redirects the flow of bodily fluids. It is commonly used to treat conditions like hydrocephalus, where excess cerebrospinal fluid accumulates in the brain. By creating an alternative pathway, a shunt helps relieve pressure and prevent complications.
Shunts can be made from various materials and are often placed surgically. They can be temporary or permanent, depending on the patient's needs. Common types include ventriculoperitoneal shunts, which drain fluid from the brain to the abdominal cavity, and dialysis shunts, used in kidney treatment.
