Shitenno
The term "Shitenno" refers to the Four Heavenly Kings in Japanese Buddhism. These deities are believed to protect the teachings of the Buddha and are often depicted in temples and art. Each king is associated with a cardinal direction: Vaiśravaṇa (North), Virūḍhaka (South), Dhrtarāṣṭra (East), and Kumāra (West). They are typically portrayed as fierce warriors, symbolizing strength and protection.
In addition to their protective roles, the Shitenno are also linked to various aspects of life and nature. They are often seen as guardians of the Buddhist faith, ensuring that the teachings remain safe from evil influences. Temples dedicated to the Shitenno can be found throughout Japan, showcasing their importance in the spiritual landscape.
