Ship's Biscuit
Ship's Biscuit is a hard, dry bread that was commonly used as a staple food for sailors during long sea voyages. Made from flour, water, and salt, it was baked twice to remove moisture, making it durable and resistant to spoilage. This longevity made it ideal for storage on ships, where fresh food was scarce.
Despite its toughness, Ship's Biscuit was often eaten with other ingredients, such as cheese or soup, to improve its flavor and texture. Sailors sometimes referred to it as "hardtack." While it provided essential calories, it was not particularly enjoyable to eat, leading to creative ways to soften it before consumption.
