Shen Te
Shen Te is a central character in the play "The Good Person of Szechwan" by Bertolt Brecht. She is a poor woman living in Szechwan, who struggles to maintain her goodness in a harsh world. Shen Te's kindness leads her to help three gods, who reward her with money to start a new life.
To survive, Shen Te adopts a male alter ego, Shui Ta, to navigate the challenges of her environment. This duality highlights the conflict between her innate goodness and the demands of a society that often rewards selfishness. Shen Te's journey explores themes of morality, survival, and the complexities of human nature.
