Seyfert galaxies
Seyfert galaxies are a type of active galaxy characterized by their bright centers, which are powered by supermassive black holes. They are named after the American astronomer Carl Seyfert, who identified them in the 1940s. These galaxies exhibit strong emission lines in their spectra, indicating the presence of hot gas that is being energized by the black hole's intense gravitational pull.
There are two main types of Seyfert galaxies: Seyfert 1 and Seyfert 2. Seyfert 1 galaxies show broad emission lines, suggesting that we are viewing the black hole's accretion disk directly, while Seyfert 2 galaxies have narrower lines, indicating that the black hole is obscured by dust and gas. Both types contribute to our understanding of galaxy evolution and the role of black holes in the universe.
