Second Barbary War
The Second Barbary War (1815) was a conflict between the United States and the North African states known as the Barbary States, primarily Algiers. This war arose from ongoing issues related to piracy and the demand for tribute from American merchant ships. After the United States gained independence, American vessels were frequently attacked, leading to a need for military action.
In response, President James Madison authorized a naval campaign to protect American interests. The U.S. Navy, under the command of Commodore Stephen Decatur, successfully defeated the Barbary pirates, leading to a treaty that ended the tribute payments and established peace in the region.
