Scolopax minor
The Scolopax minor, commonly known as the American woodcock, is a medium-sized bird found in North America. It is characterized by its short, stocky body, long bill, and large eyes positioned high on its head. The woodcock prefers habitats such as moist woodlands, fields, and wetlands, where it can find its primary food source: earthworms.
During the breeding season, male woodcocks perform elaborate aerial displays to attract females. They are known for their unique zigzag flight patterns and distinctive "peent" call. The American woodcock is a migratory bird, moving south in the winter to avoid harsh weather conditions.
