Scaphoid bone
The scaphoid bone is one of the eight small bones in the wrist, known as the carpal bones. It is located on the thumb side of the wrist and plays a crucial role in wrist movement and stability. The scaphoid is unique because it has a boat-like shape, which is where its name comes from, as "scaphoid" means "boat" in Greek.
Injuries to the scaphoid bone are common, especially in sports or falls where the wrist is extended. A fracture in this bone can lead to complications, such as poor blood supply, which may result in delayed healing or avascular necrosis. Proper diagnosis and treatment are essential for recovery.
