Scaphoid Bone
The scaphoid bone is one of the eight small bones in the wrist, known as the carpal bones. It is located on the thumb side of the wrist and plays a crucial role in wrist movement and stability. The scaphoid is shaped like a boat, which is reflected in its name, derived from the Greek word "skaphos," meaning "boat."
Due to its position, the scaphoid is often involved in wrist injuries, particularly fractures. These fractures can occur from falls onto an outstretched hand. Proper diagnosis and treatment are essential, as scaphoid fractures can lead to complications like avascular necrosis if not addressed promptly.
