Saybrook Breakwater Lighthouse
The Saybrook Breakwater Lighthouse is located at the mouth of the Connecticut River in Old Saybrook, Connecticut. Built in 1886, this lighthouse serves as a navigational aid for vessels entering the river and is known for its distinctive red and white color scheme. The structure stands 50 feet tall and features a unique octagonal shape.
The lighthouse is constructed of cast iron and is situated on a breakwater, which protects it from the waves of Long Island Sound. It was automated in 1959, eliminating the need for a resident keeper. Today, the Saybrook Breakwater Lighthouse is a popular subject for photography and local history.
