Salisbury Confederate Prison
The Salisbury Confederate Prison was a military prison located in Salisbury, North Carolina, during the American Civil War. It was established in 1861 to hold captured Union soldiers and became one of the largest Confederate prisons. The facility was known for its overcrowded conditions and inadequate supplies, leading to high mortality rates among inmates.
The prison was enclosed by a stockade and featured a series of barracks for the prisoners. By the end of the war in 1865, thousands of Union soldiers had been confined there, and many suffered from disease and malnutrition. After the war, the prison was dismantled, and the site is now a historical landmark.
