Saint Maurice of Agaunum
Saint Maurice of Agaunum was a Christian martyr and the leader of the Theban Legion, a group of soldiers in the Roman army. He is believed to have been born in Egypt and led his troops in the early 4th century. Maurice and his legion refused to persecute Christians under the orders of Emperor Maximian, leading to their execution at Agaunum, present-day Saint-Maurice in Switzerland.
Saint Maurice is venerated as a saint in various Christian traditions, particularly in the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches. His feast day is celebrated on September 22. He is often depicted in art wearing armor and holding a sword, symbolizing his role as a soldier and martyr.
