Sahtu Settlement Area
The Sahtu Settlement Area is located in the Northwest Territories of Canada. It covers approximately 280,000 square kilometers and includes the communities of Tulita, Deline, Fort Good Hope, Norman Wells, and Colville Lake. This region is known for its rich natural resources, including oil, gas, and fish, and is characterized by vast landscapes, including lakes and forests.
Established through the Sahtu Dene and Metis Comprehensive Land Claim Agreement in 1993, the Sahtu Settlement Area recognizes the rights of the Sahtu Dene and Metis peoples. The agreement provides for land ownership, resource management, and self-governance, promoting sustainable development while preserving the cultural heritage of the Indigenous communities.
