Sadhu (Ascetic)
A Sadhu is a Hindu ascetic, practitioner of yoga, or mystic who has renounced worldly life to pursue spiritual goals. They often live in solitude or in small communities, dedicating their lives to meditation, prayer, and self-discipline. Sadhus may wear simple clothing, often orange or saffron, symbolizing their renunciation of material possessions.
Sadhus are commonly associated with various sects within Hinduism, such as the Shaiva or Vaishnava traditions. They may also participate in religious festivals, like the Kumbh Mela, where they gather to share their spiritual experiences and teachings. Their lifestyle emphasizes simplicity, detachment, and a deep connection to the divine.
