Sabra and Shatila
The Sabra and Shatila refugee camps are located in Beirut, Lebanon. Established in the 1940s, they became home to many Palestinian refugees following the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. The camps are known for their overcrowded living conditions and have faced numerous challenges, including poverty and limited access to basic services.
In September 1982, the camps were the site of a tragic massacre during the Lebanese Civil War. Israeli forces, in collaboration with Lebanese militia, entered the camps, leading to the deaths of thousands of Palestinian civilians. This event has had a lasting impact on the Palestinian community and is remembered as a significant humanitarian crisis.
