Sabal palmetto
The Sabal palmetto, commonly known as the cabbage palmetto, is a species of palm tree native to the southeastern United States and the Caribbean. It typically grows to heights of 20 to 30 feet and features fan-shaped leaves that can reach up to 5 feet in diameter. This palm is well-adapted to coastal environments and can tolerate salt spray and sandy soils.
The cabbage palmetto produces small, creamy-white flowers that cluster in long spikes, followed by black berries that serve as food for various wildlife. It is often used in landscaping and is the state tree of South Carolina. Its hardiness and aesthetic appeal make it a popular choice for gardens and parks.
