SGLT
SGLT, or Sodium-Glucose Cotransporter, is a type of protein found in the kidneys and intestines. It plays a crucial role in the reabsorption of glucose from urine back into the bloodstream, helping to maintain blood sugar levels. There are two main types: SGLT1, which is primarily located in the intestines, and SGLT2, found in the kidneys.
Medications that inhibit SGLT, known as SGLT inhibitors, are used to treat type 2 diabetes. By blocking these transporters, these drugs help lower blood sugar levels by preventing glucose reabsorption, leading to increased glucose excretion in urine.
