S.S. Kresge
S.S. Kresge was an American businessman who founded the Kresge Company, a chain of discount department stores. Established in 1899, the first store was located in Detroit, Michigan. The company became known for its low-priced merchandise and was a pioneer in the five-and-dime store concept, offering a variety of goods at affordable prices.
In 1966, the Kresge Company was renamed Kmart Corporation as it expanded its operations and evolved into a larger discount retailer. The Kresge Foundation, established in 1940, continues to support charitable initiatives, reflecting S.S. Kresge's commitment to philanthropy and community development.
