Rutschblock Test
The Rutschblock Test is a method used to assess the stability of snowpack on slopes, particularly in the context of avalanche risk. It involves cutting a block of snow and observing how it behaves when a force is applied. This helps determine whether the snow is likely to slide, providing valuable information for backcountry skiers and snowboarders.
During the test, a block of snow is typically 1 meter by 1 meter and 30 centimeters deep. The tester applies a lateral force to the block, measuring how easily it moves. The results can indicate the potential for avalanches in the area, guiding safety decisions for outdoor activities.
