Rupicola rupicola
The Rupicola rupicola, commonly known as the Guianan cock-of-the-rock, is a striking bird native to the tropical rainforests of South America. It is known for its vibrant orange plumage and distinctive fan-shaped crest. Males are particularly colorful, while females are more subdued in color, featuring brown and gray tones. This species primarily inhabits rocky outcrops and steep cliffs, where it can be found foraging for fruits and insects.
During the breeding season, male Guianan cock-of-the-rocks perform elaborate displays to attract females. They gather in leks, which are communal display areas, where they showcase their plumage and vocalizations. The female selects a mate based on these performances, and after mating, she builds a nest in a rocky crevice to raise her young.
