Rufous-Collared Sparrow
The Rufous-Collared Sparrow (Zonotrichia capensis) is a small bird commonly found in open habitats across South America, particularly in the Andes and surrounding regions. It is easily recognizable by its distinctive rufous-colored collar and streaked brown and white plumage. This species typically measures about 15 to 18 centimeters in length and has a cheerful, melodic song.
These sparrows are often seen foraging on the ground for seeds and insects. They are social birds, frequently found in flocks, and adapt well to urban environments. The Rufous-Collared Sparrow plays an important role in its ecosystem by helping to disperse seeds and control insect populations.
